Michael was raised in the Midwest where he raced one-designed yachts extensively and sailed collegiately while attending University of Wisconsin where he obtained a BA (English Lit). Upon graduation he worked his way up from chartering in the Caribbean to racing within the Maxi boat and 50 ft IOR circuits for 5 years competing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Michael then moved his young family from England to San Diego in 1992 to take a job as a service representative for Barient/Sparcraft during the America’s Cup.

For the past 15 years Michael has represented new build and service yards working with the brokerage community, dealing with yacht owners and managers and participating in marketing events and sales efforts.

At Palmer Johnson, Michael acted as one of four project managers acting as a liaison between the company and the yacht to coordinate and monitor the progress of all trades. With Intermarine, he oversaw large yacht repair & refit in its entirety from issuance of proposals to formulation of contracts including oversight of the project management team. From 2003 to 2008, he assisted the Huizenga group in transforming the Rybovich brand into a world class marina and full service repair facility. At Thunderbolt Marine Michael worked with a conservatively oriented group to help structure the planning and sales effort to maximize repair efficiency and thereby ensure repeat business.

In 2011 Michael formed his own consulting business, Bacchus Yacht Consultancy, which specializes in planning, scheduling and proposals for extensive repair & refit projects on behalf of owners.

“I strongly recommend Michael… We have used Michael on two extensive projects over the past two years. In 2019 Michael budgeted, managed and delivered a complete renovation of the sun deck on M.Y. Bouchon. The work included extensions to the mast arch, fabrication and installation of bar areas, built-in seating, cabinetry, reworking of stairs, new teak flooring, lighting, plumbing etc. This current yard period M.Y. Bouchon had an entire paint job of hull and super structure as well as port engine repairs. While we have a fantastic Captain and crew, Michael’s management of the process was critical to the success of both endeavors. Michael has an incredible amount of knowledge and expertise in this industry and his project management skills and reporting systems are unmatched. We know where we are at all times during the process and at what cost. Michael is such a pleasure to work with. He has a positive yet “get it done right” attitude and is respected by the crew, the vendors, management and the owner. We would not walk into a yard period without his guidance.”

“I would like to take a moment to thank you for your involvement in the Tumblehome project at a time when the project needed a good deal of detailed oversight to keep it on track. In the end it was a fantastic project for both the Shipyard and the owner, but that may not have been the case without a good leader, coming at the right time, to pull all the pieces together. One of my favorite quotes of all time was from the owner upon completion and following his use of Tumblehome. He said “ I have been through hundreds of refits over the course of my boat owning career and this is the very first time I simply do not have a list of issues to go back to the yard with.” Without your guidance and support, that quote could have been quite different.”

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Michael Bach for nearly twenty five years, as a competitor on some of the world’s great ocean racing courses, as a co-worker during our time together at Rybovich, and now as a collaborator on a number of mega-yacht refit projects.

Michael is an experienced seaman with years of exposure to the needs and requirements of the mega-yacht community. In his capacity as a business developer for a number of well-known shipyards, he proved himself to be practical and reasoned in his interactions with prospective clients, always offering sound, achievable solutions.

Michael is an organized and methodical project manager who is a passionate advocate for his client. His considerable experience in budgeting and planning is a valuable asset to the owner or captain who is seeking to develop a clear repair or refit specification in advance of a project. He is a charismatic and effective manager who enjoys strong relationships with clients, crewmembers and vendors alike.

I hold Michael in high regard as an honest, ethical and competent business professional. I respect his technical ability and consider him to be a clear thinker, capable of considering innovative solutions to complex problems. I look forward to the next opportunity to collaborate on a project of mutual interest.”

“I have worked with Michael Bach for over 25 years in the yachting industry. He is my “go-to” guy when I have yacht projects that require expert planning and organizing. He has an astute knowledge of estimating and is highly effective in implementing efficient processes to achieve results.”
